Review by G. Jensen for Lionel G-Gauge A Christmas Tale Train Set
Rating:
Even going in with low expectations for this train, it still disappointed. I knew I was getting a low-cost, overpriced plastic train, but I was hoping the Lionel name would make it better than the $50 hardware store variety of trains. I was incorrect. The one I got was very loud in succession on the tracks (not a tolerable/natural signal either) so you could barely even hear the cheesy recorded sounds that you are supposed to be listening to. My wife and I thought about persistent it and getting another in hopes that it was a product defect, but chose that even if the loud track noise was remedied it was still too low of quality for the price. Bottom line. If you want a low-cost plastic train there are cheaper options out there. If you want a quality train, this isn’t it. Just for the record we did end up buying a regular O scale Lionel train and it is fantastic. More pricey and smaller than we were hoping, but much better quality. Not sure why Lionel allows their name to be placed on this product.

I have to side with the second reviewer. We got this train for my 4-year-ancient son for Christmas and were very pleased. It was no distress to set up. We were primarily looking for a train that would be simple for him to use without frustrating him. Because this train is huge, it’s simple for him to handle and manipulate. Because it’s battery-operated, there are no worries about checking all the track connections and making sure the engine is making contact. It just works. Yes, it’s all plastic, and the visual references to “A Christmas Tale” are a small cheesy. The simulated train noises don’t bother me a bit.

Well. I saw the previous review as we were unpacking the train, so I was hpoing not to have the same issues. It was very simple to set up. Even though the track is plastic, its fits together very well. It does not come apart easily. As I ran the train, I did not get the same noise issues that the previous reveiwer heard. Overall we are very pleased with the product. Our 2 year ancient granddaughter likes the heck out of it!
